Origin of Name: Rottweiler is derived from 'Rottweil', a town in Germany where the breed of the Rottweiler originated.

History: The Rottweiler breed is ancient, dating back to the times of the Roman Empire where the precursor to today's current Rottweiler acted as war dogs and herding dogs to help with control of cattle as the Roman legions traveled. One of these legions traveled through Rottweil, Württemberg of ancient Germany and it is believed the Roman war dog bred with local sheepdogs and local Molosser (Mastiff) breed of dog to form the breed of Rottweiler we all know and love today.

The industrial revlolution rbought about a near end to the breed after most of it's jobs (cart pulling, herding etc etc) were replaced. However, in the late 19th century the Rottweiler was detemrined to be an excellent and reliable guard dog, and their popularity skyrocketed specifically due to the need for guard dogs during World War I. Since then the Rottweiler has remained an extrmely popular dog, both in the work force as police and guard dog, and in home life as a family companion.
