Matt Addison is a 29 year old young male who worked for an anti-Umbrella taskforce determined to expose Umbrella's dark secrets in bio-weaponary and obtain evidenceof the T-Virus. He comes to Racoon City to gain entrance to The Hive, where his sister Lisa works as a research scientist with the mission of discovering their secrets and maintaining a sample of the T-Virus. Matt lost contact with his sister and comes to investigatee under the guise of a rookie Racoon Police Department cop.

He arrives at the Spencer Mansion that defends the Hive, only to find one confused occupant (Alice Abernathy). Within moments of slipping into the mansion and apprehending Alice, the place is invaded by members of an elite Umbrella Security force. Matt is apprehended, handcuffed, and he informs them he is a rookie cop. His badge number does not come up in their palm computers, but for the moment they believe his story. Undecided about what to do with him, they decide to take Matt with them down into the Hive, which they have re-opened to investigate what occured in it.

Matt is hauled around by the infiltration team, keeping his mouth shut but his ears open. When part of the team splits off to de-activate the computer program in charge of the Hive, Matt is left in the charge of J.D. Salinas and Rain Ocampo, who both seem annoyed to have to baby sit him.

After a horrible mishap in involving shutting down the Red Queen, the hordes of undead are unleashed from their locked rooms and head straight for the team. During a massive firefight, Matt segregates himself, manages to get his hands on the cuff keys, and frees himself (with a bit of help from Alice as he was nearly zombie food).

During the mayhem, he manages to escape to the offices of the Hive to try and look for his sister. He finds her desk and begins looking through her paperwork to try and learn something about her fate and what had happened down in the Hive. As he sits working, his sister (Lisa Addison) approaches him from behind. Unfortunately, his sister is also a victim of the T-Virus, and attacks him. Matt is saved by Alice who weilds a paperweight.

Matt tells Alice his true purpose for being down in the Hive, and mourns his dead sister, feeling partially responsible for her death. The group he works for wanted a sample of the T-Virus. His story triggers Alice's memories (which she had lost due to a nerve gas), and admits to him that she had been a contact for Lisa in the Hive. Matt is initially wary of her, but throughout the rest of their battle, the two come to trust eachother.

Matt follows Alice through the Hive with the rest of the survivors, and is one of the few who makes it to the train that will lead them back up to the surface. During the ride, the train is attacked by a mutated Licker, and Matt suffers a slash across his arm from the Lickers claws. Only he, and Alice, make it to the surface with a sample of the T-Virus.

Just as he and Alice believe they have survived, Matt's arm begins to mutate, small tendrils beginning to appear in the wounds. A secret door opens to expose men in Bio-hazard suits, who quickly strap Matt down and wheel him away while Alice screams and fights. Doctor William Birkin orders Matt to be placed in the 'Nemesis Program'.

RE: Apocalypse
Matt is not seen through the movie, but his fate is slowly revealed through flashbacks in Alice's memory. Matt began to mutate at an unpredictable rate, and was surgically and genetically altered in an Umbrella Lab, right beside Alice. By the end, it is revealed the large, rocket-launching weidling menace chasing Alice and her survivor brethern down is actually Matt, mutated and transformed into Nemesis, the pride and joy of the Nemesis Program.

Nemesis and Alice are forced into a battle to the death, but while fighting her, Nemesis is injured by being impaled on a large shard of metal. Matt regains some of his memories, realizes who he is and who Alice is, and fights agaisnt his programming to turn on those who commanded over him. Matt assists Alice and fights the others just before a nuclear missile is set to destroy Racoon City.

His fate has two possible endings. The movie says Matt/Nemesis was killed when the helicopter hit with the rocket launcher lands on him. However, in the novelization, Matt/Nemesis lives through this, and is killed when the nuclear device hits and annilihates Racoon City. Either way, Matt dies after helping Alice escape with the survivors.
